Larue SPR-S Scope Mount
Posted: December 04, 2008 | Last Updated: June 06, 2009

I recently bought this scope mount because I had a need to practice my ranging skills and unfortunately I don’t live where I can point a scoped rifle at stuff to do so without the neighbors calling the Cops.

My plan is to use this mount to allow me to practice around town with just the scope mounted on a cut down Ruger 10/22 stock I have.

That would allow me to get 3-5 times the amount of ranging practice that I would just going out on the weekends.  The cost of course is a “shifting zero.”

Many people on www.snipershide.com warned me that there is no system that truly returns to zero, but ...

I figured that if I bought a quality mount I could live with a minor zero shift considering the benefits of using the scope off the gun during the week.

I decided to go with the Larue because of their solid reputation and the fact that they advertise an “...astoundingly accurate system, that allows shooters to swap optics at will, with 100% confidence in their confirmed zero.” I figured there was really nothing to lose since they claimed perfection, I could only get exactly that or return the item.

Another cool thing about Larue is they threw in a hat and bottle opener to boot!

1st RANGE TEST:

After mounting the scope I ran out to the local range and sighted in at 100yards.  The scope sits about 1” higher than it did with my Enterprise Medium Rings, but with the Eagle stock bag I found that my weld was very comfortable.

I will admit that my groups sucked, but I was just looking to get a ball park idea of RTZ (return to zero) on this outing and the high temp for the day was an expected 104 deg, so I rushed things a bit .

I was working off my ruck on the tables at the range without a rear bag.  My next trip I will be working off the ruck and a rear bag proned-out in my normal shooting position.

OK, excuses out of the way… Below is the sight in group and the next image down is the only group I shot after taking the scope off and back on.

Stay tuned for more tests.....

UPDATE:

No future tests will be in the future. smile

I traded the mount to a friend for a pair of Badger Rings.

I found there was vertical stringing in groups after more tests and while that is not an issue on the gun he is using it on (Panther .308 carbine) it won’t cut it on a 600yard + rifle in my book.

The mount is well made, but as I suspected there is no free lunch with a perfect RTZ in this situation.  I did not contact Larue since I was not out anything and was not going to publish this short experience with the scope but figure what the heck.

Take it for what it is.
