IDPA - Things that make you go “hmmm…”
Posted: January 23, 2010 | Last Updated: January 23, 2010
I decided to start writing down things I see happening at my local matches that should not, and my suggestions to fix these issues. I'm looking at these from a "street" perspective not how to better "game" your IDPA match. None of the suggested "best practices" are going to make or break you match scores either.
- Shooter had a "drop free" mag stick in his G19 while doing a speed reload. He tried 3-4 times to dump it by using the mag release and shaking the gun up and down with his strong hand before finally pulling the mag out with his support hand.
Best Practice:
Rip mag from well and drop behind you as you grab your spare mag off the belt instead of relying on gravity. This clears the mag-well 100% of the time, and gets the empty mag out of the way so you don't slip and fall on it. It also works with when the gun's mag-well is not vertical to the ground, like shooting under a car.
- Shooter fumbled his "tactical reload" while kneeling behind a barricade. This happens a lot, even to experienced shooters.
Best Practice:
The only time a "tactical reload" is warranted over a "reload with retention" is.... hmmm, how about never? The tactical reload serves no purpose other than to gain time in a game. In a shooting you are either reloading from slide lock or have time to reload with retention behind cover. (see Handgun Reloads Defined)
